Our island friends Kangaroo Island is a haven for Australia's native flora and fauna. More than half of the land area has never been cleared of vegetation and 30% of the island is protected as national and conservation parks, including Flinders Chase National Park. Native to the island are the Kangaroo Island Kangaroo, Tammar Wallaby, Brushtail Possum, Short Beaked Echidna, Southern Brown Bandicoot, Western and Little Pygmy Possum, Australian Sea Lion, Australian Fur Seals, Little Penguins and another 266 bird species. There are more than 1100 species of plants found on Kangaroo Island and of these 850 are native. Because of its isolation, there are 46 plants exclusive to the island. While wildflowers can be found all year round, spring brings them out in abundance. |
